Description
When a person is in crisis, they are unable to successfully use coping skills due to the extreme feelings they are experiencing. Perception is often altered and memory is affected causing an array of negative feelings like confusion, anger, guilt, hopelessness, vulnerability, fear, and helplessness. Because they are unable to appropriately utilize coping skills, they are more likely to make poor decisions and display unsafe or challenging behavior. As someone who is in a position of support, it is crucial that you are equipped with knowledge and tools so that you can help the person through a crisis and not cause further escalation.
