Throughout life, we will likely experience things that are stressful, difficult, or challenging, this is part of normal life experience. But someone may also, unfortunately, experience an event beyond what's normal, causing physical, spiritual, psychological, or emotional harm. This could be from a variety of events like witnessing violence or being a victim of violence, going through a natural disaster, neglect, etc. As care providers and a community of people in general, it is so important that we understand the effects of trauma. How we approach providing care and the type of care we provide to a person who has been traumatized differs from that of someone who has not experienced trauma. Research estimates that between 60-75% of people in the United States alone have experienced a traumatic event. Read more

Throughout much of our history, disability has been seen as something that needs to be fixed, cured, and eliminated. Treatments that were being used and seen as "best-practice" were against the person's will, inhumane, and even often without their knowledge. From the early 1900s through the 1970s, people with disabilities were labeled with words like moron, feeble-minded, and idiots and were segregated from the general public, placed into institutions and asylums, and sterilized.
